Tetapi biasalah, Melayu mudah lupa.

Robert Kuok, Malaysia's Richest Man - whither discrimination claims?

Tan Sri Robert Kuok

Tan Sri Robert Kuok, the Kuok Group patriarch, remains Malaysia's richest with a net worth of US$9 billion, down from US$10 billion a year ago, according to the 2009 Forbes Asia Malaysia Rich List.

In a statement here today, Forbes said Kuok has held the top spot every year since Forbes Asia began ranking the 40 richest Malaysians in 2006.

Businessman Tan Sri Ananda Krishnan held on to his second place with a net worth of US$7 billion, just down from US$7.2 billion last year.

He has also maintained the same ranking every year since 2006.

Together, Kouk and Ananda account for 44% of the top 40's wealth.

They are also the two richest people in Southeast Asia.

The third richest is Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng, head of IOI Group, one of the world's leading operators of palm oil plantations.

He is worth US$3.2bil, down from US$5.5 bil last year but keeps his position in the top three.

Malaysia's 40 richest people are worth a combined US$36bil, down from US$46bil a year ago.

It said the 22% loss in wealth is largely in line with the 21% drop in the Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) and is not too bad, considering the fact that the Malaysian ringgit has lost 10% against the US dollar, the currency by which the net worths are measured.

Malaysia has nine billionaires who are collectively worth US$30bil or 84% of the total wealth amassed by the country's top 40.

This is the biggest wealth disparity among Forbes Asia's rich list.

Tan Sri Vincent Tan (ranked 10, US$750mil) of Berjaya Corporation Bhd is the only Malaysian to drop out of the billionaire ranks in the past 12 months as share prices in his companies have declined.

Three making their debut are IOI Board member Chan Fong Ann (ranked 18, US$209mil), gaming tycoon Tan Sri Chen Lip Keong (ranked 21, US$195mil) and software executive Goh Peng Ooi (ranked 34, US$112mil).

Four people have returned to the rankings after an absence of a year or more.

Among them are Tan Sri Syed Mohd Yusof Tun Syed Nasir (ranked 37, US$100mil) and Tan Sri Tan Teong Hean (ranked 39, US$95mil), who cashed out of Southern Bank several years ago and is now making new investments.

The latest issue of Forbes Asia also features Tan Sri Francis Yeoh, head of conglomerate YTL (ranked seven,US$1.8 billion).

The full list of Malaysia's richest and the story on Francis Yeoh can be found in the June 8 issue of Forbes Asia, which is now available on newsstands. - BERNAMA

Paint roof white to reflect energy

US Energy Secretary Steven Chu said Tuesday the Obama administration wanted to paint roofs an energy-reflecting white, as he took part in a climate change symposium in London.

The Nobel laureate in physics called for a "new revolution" in energy generation to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

But he warned there was no silver bullet for tackling climate change, and said a range of measures should be introduced, including painting flat roofs white.

Making roads and roofs a paler colour could have the equivalent effect of taking every car in the world off the road for 11 years, Chu said.

It was a geo-engineering scheme that was "completely benign" and would keep buildings cooler and reduce energy use from air conditioning, as well as reflecting sunlight back away from the Earth.

For people who found white hard on the eye, scientists had also developed "cool colours" which looked to the human eye like normal ones, but reflect heat like pale colours even if they are darker shades.

And painting cars in cool or light colours could deliver considerable savings on energy use for air conditioning units, he said.

Speaking at the start of a symposium on climate change hosted by the Prince of Wales and attended by more than 20 Nobel laureates, Chu said fresh thinking was required to cut the amount of carbon created by power generation.

He said: "The industrial revolution was a revolution in the use of energy. It offloaded from human and animal power into using fossil fuels.

"We have to go to a different new revolution that can severely decrease the amount of carbon emissions in the generation of energy."

Zaharin Yassin setuju Chin Peng dibenarkan kembali...

Dakwaan Aminah: SPR mahu kaji bukti terlebih dahulu

Pengerusinya, Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof berkata, pihaknya perlu meneliti setiap bukti yang diberikan sebelum membuat sebarang keputusan lanjut mengenainya.

Api perjuangan sesetengah blogger padam?

Ai? Sedar tak beberapa blog 'prominent' kini semakin liat mengupdatekan post mereka?

Remembering 60th anniversary of Communist Party of Malaya's 10th regiment? Think again...

Whether it is Abdullah CD, Mat Indera, Rashid Maidin or other Malays, who once belonged to the terrorist brigade, the fact is glaring - they are just traitors and murderers!

Lets reflect that darkest of hours many years back...

When pushed too far: The Siege of Bukit Kepong

Kampong Bukit Kepong Police Station, lay at the south-west apex of a big bend in the Muar river at around the 65km mark and upstream from its mouth on the west coast of the Johor. The village itself was small and isolated - consisting of about twenty shops and groups of accompanying houses - and by early 1950 the area had became a hive of CT activity.

From the month of January onwards, there had been a noticeable increase in the tempo of contacts & incidents - both road and river ambushes amongst other - but the most disconcerting of all, was the discovery of blazed trail markings showing the way towards the town. The nearest township of note to Bukit Kepong was Lenga, about 10km to the south along a rough enemy controlled dirt road in a vehicle or a 2 ½ hour foot patrol, but apart from this, it was just a few other like kampongs scattered about.

The station was commanded by OCPS Sgt Ray Dancey - an old Palestine hand and away at the time and a point not missed by the CT - and manned by a mixed platoon of 15 Malay Regular and Marine Police Constables under the stocky and redoubtable Sgt Jamil Mohd Shah.

At the time this force was complimented by three Special Constables (SC) and four local Auxiliary Police (AP) as needed by the post to assist with the guarding and other duty. A force of 22 all told. Thirteen police wives and children were also lodged in the married quarters at the rear of the compound.

Communications in and out of Bukit Kepong were poor - hence the marine police attachments and the station’s launch service down to Muar - and signals to and from its nearest neighbour Kampong Java at about a kilometre away, as with kampongs Gek & Tui further on, was by the use of gongs. Even the outpost’s name was ominously translated as 'Siege Hill’- but this was historically believed to have originated from it’s 186m namesake 5km to the east.

Now in the early morning darkness of the 23rd of February 1950, the 200 strong 4th Independent Company under the joint leadership of one of the few Malay Communist Terrorists within the MRLA called Muhammad Indera AKA Mat Indra from Muar (the main leader was believed the tactical mastermind & Commissar, Goh Peng Tun), well armed with a full compliment of infantry weapons, began its move in towards the Bukit Kepong compound (for layout see map).

The Communist Terrorist's aim was to teach the police post a comprehensive lesson and to use it as an example to others, and Mat Indra - who wore a talisman around his neck, which was believed bulletproof by some - was contemplating a quick and easy straight forward job.

The following is a reconstruction of the phases of battle which followed:

Lay out Map of BK Station under siege by CT

0400hrs - after some difficulty in the darkness, the Communist Terrorists deploys to complete the encirclement of Bukit Kepong. The group is accompanied by some of the wives and children and these are to act as medical staff and to carry away the Communist Terrorists casualties (mainly in gunny sacks provided). Half the force is deployed to the front and main parts of the compound (Group 1), with the other half in Pl group lots (Groups 2 & 3), deployed to the other three sides.

At this point, there is only L/Cpl Jidin bin Omar and SC Abdul Kadir Jusoh within the Charge Room, and two APs in Samad Yatin & Osman Yahya on guard in the compound backed by SC Jaffar Hassan with a Stengun. There is also every indication, that the latter had become aware of the CT’s movements,

0430hrs - SC Jaffar challenges and fires on a CT who is seen to fall and the attack on the wire begins and builds up to the accompaniment of screaming and bugle blasts and although all forward sides are attacked simultaneously, the CTs mainly concentrate on the penetration of the front of the installation and where the post’s main strong-points are housed. They had expected to totally surprise the station - but are in turn! Caught completely by surprise by the volume and intensity of the return fire. This, particularly, from the two Bren Guns embedded underneath the Charge Room - it being a raised structure on posts - but also as from within the C/R itself as well as from the back and sides of the compound. Around this juncture, AP Osman is KIA and SC Jaffar is wounded, with the wives and children of the policemen fully noted assisting their menfolk with the defence of the base,

0450hrs - the initial CT assault is beaten back after a protracted exchange but at the loss of Sgt Jamil who had been manning one of the Brens under the C/R, and who is now seen slumped lifeless over one of the weapons. There were trapdoors in use for access down to the Bren guns. Command is now assumed by the junior NCOs like the youthful and diminutive Cpl Mohd Yassin and the much larger L/Cpl Jidin bin Omar (later fatally WIA)and combined casualties for both sides at this time, are placed at a dozen plus. The police wives and children left sheltering in the flimsy walled and also elevated married quarter building behind, make up a good portion of this. Also as such, at around this period. Four of the wives and five children manage to make their escape out of the compound,

0500hrs - Auxiliary Police and small groups of citizen volunteers are mobilised around Kampong Java under the headman Penghulu Ali bin Mustaffa, and these react to the attack by going to Bukit Kepong's aid. They’re expected by the CT rearguard, however, and in turn ambushed and held engaged in skirmishes and suffering casualties. About this time the defenders main firepower in the two Bren guns back at the station, are knocked out,

0530hrs - the CTs continue a number of assaults on the wire and lighting and which provides them with a small breach at the front side and with which they attempts an envelopment of the C/R but are still held and beaten back from within and from the interlocking fire from the married quarters. Some of the weapons are at this point wielded by the wives remaining.

Mat Indra is reported frantic at the lack of progress after an hour and wary of the approaching daylight, calls for an all out bayonet charge at 0600. Both the compound and CT casualties had mounted and are being treated in situ by the wives and children as before. The CT casualties had been retrieved under fire, and it was noted how the police would not fire at the women and children so involved.

0600hrs - visibility is now better and the CTs hit the wire again in a frantic mass as ordered, but are again surprisingly beaten back with the exception of some further gains at the SW rear and left hand side by the married quarters. Mat Indra now calls for a pause to reconsider his options. During this period and as it had been throughout the engagement, loud hailers and personal voice addresses had been used on the defenders in an attempt to get them to surrender. But to no avail - in spite of the fact that they had suffered badly - and just as the many alternate offers of ‘safe conduct’ out of the area had been treated with defiance and derision,

0700hrs - the frontal targets are now isolated by the CTs and all efforts concentrated in the vicinity of the previous gains around the rear and SW side and this providing them with an instant result. One of the police wives captured in this thrust, Mariam Ibrahim the wife of Constable Mohamad Jaafar, told her captors that only an other woman and her young child were left alive in the married quarters. The CTs force Mariam to appeal to the men to surrender but this is duly ignored. About this time, Fatimah Yaaba and her son Hassan are also taken, also asked to appeal to the men, and on refusal Fatimah is executed. Her husband Constable Abu Bakar Daud the base’s MP launch driver down at his duty station on the Muar river - perhaps aware of the personal tragedy which had just taken place - elects to fight to the death in a skirmish with the CT sent to capture and sink his launch. In the final outcome he is shot through the chest & arm.

There are indicators that some others were either sent or also went to assist him with getting away for help. But this group is also assumed engaged by the CTs. And although its also believed that the MP Constable could have saved himself if he chose by starting his motors and casting off, he never ever did.

At this point, the CTs consolidate their hold on the rear of the complex through the torching of both the launch (which sank) and the married quarters - with the reported wife Saadiah and daughter Simah still alive inside and refusing to come out - and throwing the executed woman’s body into the flames as well. Also about this time, the villagers of Durian Chondong a riverine kampong to the west, dispatched a boat down to Lenga to inform the police of the attack,

0800hrs - full daylight and with the rear of the compound ablaze, the CTs execute a determined grenade ‘pincer’ attack against the C/R and are finally successful. Setting it ablaze as well. Then picking off both male and female survivors attempting to get out with rifle shots - some seen with their clothing fully on fire at this point - and capturing Hassan bin Abu Bakar the young son of badly wounded MP Constable Abu Bakar in the process.

Hassan was caught in the vicinity of the silenced Bren guns, with some believing that he was the last person seen standing or perhaps even attempting to fire, one of the weapon at this duty station. Perhaps he was just too shocked to leave his comatose father nearby or his dead mother Fatimah’s burnt body. But either way! The brave lad was thrown live into the raging flames of the C/R along with all the dead and wounded police defenders including Sgt Jamil. Also about this time, news of the attack is relayed to Police District HQ at Pagoh, and a relief force of Jungle Squad and Seaforth Highlanders is prepared for a forced march to Bukit Kepong,

0930hrs - Mat Indra finally declares the objective taken - five hours after the commencement of what had been considered a simple action - and stating that they the MRLA ‘had dealt a glorious blow against the Imperialists and for the Liberation of the Oppressed People’ (some say that Mat Indra would was later be killed in an ambush)-- but it was reported that he was captured and later hanged in Taiping Prison in Perak. Also around this time, a boatful of villagers from Durian Chondong and coming to investigate and to assist, are also engaged by the CT force as they pull out,

0940hrs - a spotter aircraft also sent out to investigate, calls back to base that there is nothing but a charred ruin - ‘with no signs of life in evidence’

1030hrs - the exhausted relief force from Pagoh led by OC JJ Raj Jr, finally arives to take charge and is greeted by scenes of massive devastation. But the refurbishment of the BK station area, at times a slow refurbishment, does now begin,

12 Regular Police, two Special Constables, all of the four Auxiliary Police and four dependants, a total of 22, fought to the death at the Battle of Bukit Kepong. AP Constable Ali Akop bin Ahmad, who had earlier been cited for a Colonial Police Medal for Gallantry for a previous action, and once out of rounds, was last seen charging the barbed wire with his parang as example. A further four constables were found severely wounded within the compound. Of these survivors, as apart from the women and children who had managed to slip out much earlier, only PC Yusof Rono and well in his seventies now, is still alive today. A further two APs were also killed in action and a number of locals WIA during the relief actions as mentioned.

The CTs would only ever admit to around 10 casualties, but a quadruple of this would be very much closer to the mark. From the outset, the garrison had been outnumbered ten to one yet it never slackened in its resolve to do its duty. Even after the death of Sgt Jamil, and who is credited with the setting of the tone of the resistance, no one nor at anytime, appeared to consider the numerous offers of surrender or ‘safe conduct’ held out to them by the CT.

Bukit Kepong was also the first real indicator for the MRLA, that the affable laidback Malay, might just not be the easy mark that had been estimated. And that they would clearly constitute an additional factor in their the MCP’s, over simplistic overview of Red independence and rule in Malaya.

It was also noted how quickly the humble kampong Malays, reverted to the fatalistic strength of their Muslim faith when cornered. In the final analysis, the words of an SEP who was one of the attacking force expresses it all - ‘I admired them at the time, and admire them to this very day’.

Mat Indera Wira Bangsa?

‘Dilema Melayu Anwar’

Komen yang menyusul;

Cuba baca artikel dalam majalah The New Yorker itu.

Dengan tersiarnya artikel majalah The New Yorker itu, masyarakat intelek Amerika kini akhirnya disedarkan mengenai Malaysia.

Where people power ends and institutional power begins (on behalf of the people)

Democracies that are entrenchedly rooted to the Rule of Law, are Nations of Laws, not of Men.

It is the Assembly and not the who people determine who becomes MB by giving/withholding support.

So, by going back to the people against the wishes of the majority ADUN, who were, invariably elected by the people during an officially convened election, naturally transgresses the right and role of the Assembly, who were mandated to represent the people.

There has to be a demarcation of sorts as to where the people play their part and where it ends when they surrender their mandate into the hands of their duly elected representatives. The people have a chance to elect their constituency representative every five years, or earlier if the good Sultan agrees.

And this is clearly entrenched within the Constitution, which says it is the Royal Prerogative. Henceforth, To force the Sultan to agree is to deny him his constitutional discretion.

I believe We must accept supremacy of laws over groups of people to be safely anchored as a nation based on laws.

And let us not forget there is an orderly way for the people to legislate law. Disorderliness is equal to anarchy, and anarchy begets lawlessness and misery.

Perak: penyelesaian bukan hanya menerusi mahkamah

Mereka akan kata NO.

Sivakumar adhered to Pakatan plan to play stubborn

Replicated without permission from A Voice

Forget the constitution, assembly procedure and standing orders, the game at the State Assembly today was lost to the private messaging (PM) system.

It was the PM system installed for the right side of the Speaker in the Assembly that wanted them to be placed there. But the messaging system in the Assembly hall was removed. Speaker Sivakumar gila babi could not get a play-by-play instruction from his publicly despiced “svengali” Assemblyman, Dato Seri Ngeh Koo Ham. [Read this expose by blog RBF here]

Sivakumar was following the Pakatan Rakyat plan to play stubborn, refute and ignore the court order and standing order convention, and create sufficient chaos and disruption to stop the State Assembly from proceeding. This was obvious in Nizar’s press statement after the adjournment to refute the legality of the State Assembly.

It was a clear cut case that they hoped there would be no Assembly called before the 13th and there would be an automatic dissolution of the State Assembly. Subsequently a statewide general election would be called and they believed they will come out victorious. That is what lies behind their shallow cliché for returning power to the people.

Realistically, the people only vote individual representative and not in the appointing of Government and Head of Government. Whether the decision is based on party is subject to an endless never ending argument.

After the ceremonial watching of the guards by Pemangku Sultan, Raja Nazrin, Sivakumar was playing his instruction to the letter to refuse to commence the Assembly. He insisted that Menteri Besar Dr Zambery, 6 exco members, and 3 independents are suspended and thus, requested for their removals.

Sivakumar’s refusal to abide by the court order could be predicted by PAS lawyer, Hanipa Maidin’s lame opinion that the court decision is not an instruction and could be ignored.

The Assembly looks to be heading for a standstill with either side refusing to budge – Sivakumar refused to begin the Assembly meeting and 10 Barisan and Independent Assemblymen refused to leave the hall. There was a possibility that his Majesty may ended up being in the waiting room till midnight.

Then out of the blue, Deputy Speaker Hii came forward to take control of the Assembly and assume Speakership role. She ignored the jeering, irritating remarks and gestures, and near physical harassment by her former colleagues to initiate the Assembly’s proceeding.

Sivakumar was subsequently removed, Dato R Ganesan was voted as Speaker and Barisan Nasional took control of the Assembly.

For that moment, the Pakatan “Riot” could only create trouble and riotous gestures but was without an answer. Sivakumar was dumbfounded without any instruction coming in into the system from Ngeh and stand silent speechless without an intelligent response and argument to dispute.

By the time all motions particularly on the various important Committees and declaration on the illegality of "the meeting under the tree" were passed, the Pakatan "Riot" seemed to have turned dumb to go along to agree for a recess call by new Speaker Dato R Ganesan.

The unexpected “coup” by Hii stole away the attention and basically provided a basis for BN to buy another 6 months, sufficient for all matters in the courts to come to a decision. Is it legal? Go to the courts for resolution. They sure wouldn't mind if the courts favour them but not against them.

In the meanwhile, be ready with Pakatan Rakyat’s rhetoric on division of powers between judiciary, legislature, executive and constitutional monarchy. It is great in theory but seldom work in totality. After all, Nizar himself went through the courts for a legal redress. And, the decision on who would be Menteri Besar would be coming on Monday.

Throughout today’s episode and jungle animalistic act by the Pakatan Riotous politicians, one unknown hero will be technology.

SMSes to and from legal adviser and lawyers, Dato Shafee Abdullah and Dato Hafarizam with Menteri Besar Dato Dr Zambery and Senior Exco Dato Hamidah Osman must have really helped to time make Hii’s surprise move into a real surprise.

With Ganesan in the Speaker post, order begin to set in and the rest was a breeze despite the shouting, howling and hustling by Pakatan Riot ADUNs. Sivakumar and few ADUNs could not continue with their disrespectful ways and got thrown out with ease. The losing aggressor started to play victim drama. Lost are their misbehaviours.

By the time, HRH Raja Nazrin addressed the Assembly, all is lost on the Pakatan “Riot”. Nizar and his “elder brother”, Ngeh was disgracely disciplined in not so many words by the mere gesture of being called forward by HRH.

Technology, specifically the inavailability of the PM system it may have cost Pakatan "Riot". But, what could have happened should Deputy Speaker Hii was unable to break the deadlock? Let’s just be reminded merely the maxim majority should be in control and that is how the cookie should naturally crumble.

The expensive political cost to Pakatan Riot was well described by Zambery with the term tyranny of the minority. [Read MB’s press statement in full here.] They will have to think hard to spin and divert attention from their riotous misbehavior in and outside the Assembly which is clearly seen visibly and orally for the world and most importantly for the rakyat to see.

Now it will all depend on UMNO and the component parties of BN to take the necessary change and make themselves palatable to the rakyat. The lawyers, media, bloggers, technology etc. can only help so much. It depends on them now to win the mind, heart and heart of the people.

Boorish behaviour at the Perak Assembly

It was the first time that Malaysians had seen such a spectacle at a legislative sitting, and on top of that, one that lasted five hours.

The assemblymen spent barely any time in their seats as members from the opposing parties wrested microphones away from one another, shoved one another around and generally behaved boorishly.

"It was utterly disgraceful. We expected them to have a showdown: name-calling, protesting and shouting, perhaps. What happened yesterday was a new low in Malaysian politics," wrote The Star's Wong Chun Wai.

Raja Petra penipu patologikal

Sivakumar buat hal lagi...

Wither Pakatan, then?

PAS is in the grip of a debate over the nature of its leadership ahead of party polls next month.

A big controversy has broken out after Datuk Mohamed Daud Iraqi, who leads the Dewan Ulama said the top two posts in he party could be held only by ulama.

His comments added to an internal debate on whether PAS should strengthen its Malay-Islam roots by forming a loose coalition with UMNO, or get closer to the multiracial Pakatan Rakyat alliance.

“PAS is an Islamist party, therefore it should be led by individuals from religious backgrounds,” said Mohamed Daud, who leads the powerful council of clerics or Dewan Ulama PAS.

Anwar jadikan pendirian Pakatan bahan lawak...

Hadi's engaging UMNO sparks unhappiness among PAS grassroots

A recent blog posting made by the son of PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat provides a glimpse into the party’s internal strife as warring factions fight for dominance ahead of its June elections.

Nik Abduh Nik Aziz has claimed that his father was "tricked" into rejecting the idea of forming a unity government with Umno. He said that certain quarters, whom he did not named, were attempting to sow disunity in the party.

Party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang has been the major proponent behind the unity government concept, supporting the idea of PAS engaging its archrival Umno to discuss the possibility of forming a ruling coalition.

This idea however was openly rejected by Nik Aziz and the two top leaders have openly clashed on the matter.

Nik Aziz’s son claimed that the rejection came after intense lobbying by the ‘Erdogan’ faction led by party vice-president Datuk Husam Musa who are against the idea of PAS cooperating with Umno and BN.

Nik Abduh, an apparent supporter of the unity government idea, further insinuated that the ‘Erdogan’ faction, through his father’s closest aides, had provided Nik Aziz with a distorted version of Hadi’s unity government proposal.

This sentiment is shared by many PAS members from the pro-Hadi faction.

“Nik Aziz is not getting the real picture so that was why he rejected Hadi’s unity government proposal. Some quarters were giving the wrong ideas to him by saying that Hadi intends to join BN and all that when it is not true,” a source said.

Pro-Hadi leaders like the PAS deputy youth chief Nasrudin Hasan are now openly backing Nik Abduh's claims.

“He would take responsibility over his allegations. If his allegations are true, it means that he has stood up for what is right and Allah would know how to reward him,” said the PAS leader in his blog posting yesterday.

“If you look at what has been written on blogs and websites (on Hadi and Nik Aziz), trust me you would find elements clearly intending to sow disunity in the party,” he added.

Hadi’s supporters have also urged Nik Aziz’s closest aides to respond to the allegations made by Nik Abduh but so far there has been no response.

Hadi now faces an uphill battle in winning back the hearts of the PAS grassroots at the party’s Muktamar to be held at the Malawati Stadium in Shah Alam this June.

His idea of engaging Umno had sparked unhappiness among many of the grassroot members.

PAS Deputy President Nassarudin Isa is also under fire as the party prepares for its polls.
