KAMPAR (The Star, May 2, 2007): The upgrading of the Gopeng-Kampar sub-district into a full-fledged district makes it Perak's tenth.
Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said the Cabinet had approved the elevation of the sub-district's status last week.
The Perak state government had asked for its status to be upgraded following rapid development in the area.
Ong said that the presence of international standard facilities, rapid economic activity and a safe environment were among the criteria for becoming a district.
“Kampar will eventually become a dynamic and progressive district,” he said during the opening ceremony of the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman campus here yesterday.
The Gopeng-Kampar sub-district previously fell under the jurisdiction of the Kinta Selatan district council.
Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali said that the sub-district's elevation would enable the people to enjoy better service from the Government. He was confident that Kampar could be upgraded to a municipality soon.
